Every day I spend a lot of time talking about food with clients, what we’ve been eating, what we are going to eat, new recipes, new ingredients, how we can improve and on it goes………….
The biggest challenge comes with fearing food, when people are afraid of food, years of yo-yo dieting can lead to confusion and what we see in the media often leads to a whole lot of decision-making! Should I eat low-fat, low sugar, full fat, high carb, paleo or primal, grass-fed, handpicked !?!!!!???
I like to think of food in simple terms, eat whole, fresh foods of the best quality you can afford, at every mealtime. If it’s processed or arrives in a packet give it a miss! Nourish your body with the best possible fuel that’s available to you. Allow yourself time to prepare your food and try not to see it as a chore but as a time to get creative and experiment with new recipes, ingredients and ideas. Take time to learn the basics of cooking, chopping, pan frying, chargrilling, steaming, roasting, slow cooking and most of all knowing when something is cooked.
Make your kitchen a place of relaxation and surround yourself with things that make you feel happy there, utensils that you are comfortable with and that are up to the job. When you start to enjoy the process of preparing your food your diet and nutrition will flourish. Start by learning a couple of simple dishes, then use your creativity and seasonal produce to mix them up and before you know it you’ll be creating your own dishes with no need for a recipe.
A chicken roasted on Sunday with garlic, lemon and rosemary, can become a stir fry on Monday evening with ginger, noodles and veg…..then a lunch wrap with avocado and spring onion on Tuesday.
Keep it simple and get creative……………make recipes your own…
